Opportunity: Stories from the City

Tuesday, 11 Mar 2008

An opportunity for writers and artists.

  Stories from the City

A one-off magazine about Liverpool: past, present and future. In the run-up to '08' the word 'culture' oversaturated the city and became a dirty word. However now 2007 has given way to 2008 we feel it is time to get away from all that has gone before and look at things with a fresh pair of eyes.

The publication aims to go above and beyond talk of the 'year of culture'. It is an attempt to get to the heart of Liverpool, unafraid to look at both positives and negatives in its pursuit of an honest appraisal of where this most idiosyncratic of cities is at, and more importantly where it is headed.

We are looking for passionate writers and artists to contribute. There is no money involved but it is an opportunity to have your voice heard across the city, and to showcase your work to the world who, in 2008, will have their radars on our Mersey paradise.

We want to cause controversy and provoke opinion; we are not afraid of being radical, provided the argument justifies it. We don't want to sound lazy or contrived so ideas have to be fresh, relevant and insightful.

  Writers

The aim is to be original and challenging. It is envisaged that the majority of what we publish will be journalistic in style, but we welcome poems, short stories and miscellaneous creative writing too. Insight and depth is what we're looking for, not half-baked rants about Yuppie flats and Quiggins. We want to get to the heart of what Liverpool's about. Don't be afraid to be critical or positive of the city. Liverpool is both brilliant and awful at the same time, and we want to reflect that.

  Artists/Designers

The publication has to be striking in design. We're looking for somebody who can create an artistic identity to run consistently through the magazine. Typographic and layout skills are highly desired, as is an innovative and contemporary approach to design. We are also looking for an artist who can provide us with an enticing piece of cover art that sums up what we're all about and catches the reader's attention. Remember, the cover is our main selling point so the more provocative and arresting the better. Our rules are there are no rules provided quality, originality and reference to Liverpool are all present.
